ISO ने MP4 को 2001 में MPEG-4 Part 14 (ISO/IEC 14496-14) के रूप में मानकीकृत किया, Apple QuickTime कंटेनर पर आधारित। H.264 (2003), H.265 (2013) और AV1 (2018) कोडेक ने इसकी क्षमताएँ बढ़ाई हैं।
