WMV is Microsoft's proprietary video codec and container, designed for streaming and playback on Windows. It was widely used in the early 2000s for web video and DRM-protected content, but has been largely replaced by MP4 with H.264.

WMV uses the ASF (Advanced Systems Format) container with Microsoft's proprietary codecs (WMV7, WMV8, WMV9/VC-1). The format supports interlaced video, DRM, and streaming.

Microsoft developed WMV in 1999 as part of the Windows Media framework. WMV9 was submitted to SMPTE and became the basis for VC-1, used in Blu-ray. Despite this, WMV declined as H.264 dominated.
